Not many people are aware that the spectacular design for the Sydney Opera house was selected through an international competition. The winning entry was sent in by a Danish architect by the name of Jorn Utzon. The gentleman was little known before the fame and glory that the award brought him. Another interesting turn to the episode was that Jorn Utzon was relieved of his position as chief architect even before, the construction of the Sydney Opera House was complete. Conflict and accusations regarding construction of budgets and costs were the chief reason for his exit.

After his work on Sydney Opera House, Jorn Utzon completed other architectural projects such as the Can Lis in Majorca (1972), Bagsvrd Church in Denmark (1976), the Kuwait National Assembly (1983), The Paustian Furniture Store in Copenhagen (1987) and Can Feliz in Majorca (1995).

The year 2007 was a landmark year for the Sydney Opera House. It was selected as a world heritage site by the UNESCO. The venue today boasts of a large concert house that can seat around 2,000. The Taj Mahal is located in the city of Agra, which is in the Uttar Pradesh state of India. This amazing monument is a symbol of love and took over 20 years to build. It is said that the Moghul Emperor Shah Jahan had to hire more than 20,000 artists and craftsmen to construct the Taj Mahal. Many people believe that Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal as a gift for his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The fact is that Mumtaz Mahal died when giving birth to their 14th child. Shah Jahan then decided to build the Taj Mahal in her memory. Another very tragic thing about the contruction of the Taj Mahal was that, Shah Jahan ordered the hands of all 20,000 artisans to be chopped after the construction was complete. He was so impressed by the monument that he was afraid that they would one day construct another similar building.

The above picture of the Taj Mahal is one of the very popular angles at which this monument is shot. The majestic white marble structure of the Taj Mahal along with the four minarets can be clearly seen in the image. What is not very easily visible is that there is a slight tilt (outwards) of the minarets. We will explain this in the remaining paragraphs of this report.

The above image shows one of the four minarets surrounding the Taj Mahal. A little known thing about the minarets is that, they tilt slightly outwards away from the monument. The tilting of the minarets is not because of the ageing construction or similar reasons. The fact is that the original design specifications of the Taj Mahal deliberately provided for the tilting of the minarets. It was felt that this design feature would cause the minarets to fall away from the monument in case of an earthquake.

A side view of the Taj Mahal, the majestic white marble structure is inlaid with semi precious gemstones like jasper. The fact that more than 20,000 artisans were required to make Shah Jahan's dream monument come true, gives you an idea of the intricate work required to be done both inside and outside the taj mahal.

However there is one temple in the Ayuthaya province of Thailand that is different. You do not have to be a religious minded person or a devout Buddhist to be amazed by the wat maha thaat temple in Ayuthaya. The huge premises of this once grand temple houses the ruins of a temple that was ravaged by war. More than 3 centuries ago, the Burmese fought a pitched battle with Thai warriors right in the heart of the temple. Nothing was thought to be sacred for the Burmese, the destroyed, mutilated and burnt even the majestic Lord Buddha statues in the temple.

Historians have an accurate estimate of what exactly happened during that war but, the reasons for the senseless destruction remains beyond of their understanding. The war was definitely not about religious intolerance, both Burma and Thailand have large Buddhist population. Some people feel that the Burmese destroyed this temple in Ayuthaya and looted the gold and other treasures that were present on the premises. Others believe that, the importance of the wat mahathat temple in Ayuthaya to the Thais is what prompted the destruction. The Burmese wanted to deal a mental blow to the Thais.

The Bangkok packaging exhibition was an interesting event attended by a Kaisilver team. We have always encouraged our staff to develop interest in diverse products and activities. Puthomonthon Park In Nakhon Pathom Province

The Kaisilver team took time off to visit the puthamonthon park in the Nakhon Pathom province of Thailand. This is a huge park covering a few hundred acres. The gardens are kept very clean and you will also come across some fascinating plants grown in interesting patterns. The best part of this Budhamonthon park is a tall standing statue of Lord Buddha. The statue is mounted on a white marble pedestal, the total height of the Buddha statue is around 15 to 17 meters high.

The gardens are so huge that they are never crowded with visitors. However large crowds do gather during ceremonial celebrations held at the Buddhamonthon park. Nakhon Pathom is not very far from Bangkok, you can keep around 2 to 3 hours to travel and visit this place. The atmosphere is quiet and peaceful, walk to the center of the park and you will not be able to hear the sound of traffic on the adjacent roads.
